I hear Telltale is going to be making Wallace & Gromit games. Is it true?
It is! We've actually had our eye on the award-winning Wallace & Gromit franchise for a while now. The series is funny and imaginative, and it's known for creative storytelling and characters with distinctive personalities. Plus, the situations the characters get themselves into are ripe for the comedic storytelling that Telltale is so good at. For all of these reasons, we thought Wallace & Gromit would make a great addition to Telltale's lineup.
As luck would have it, the good folks at
Aardman (the animation studio behind Wallace & Gromit) agreed! So we entered into a partnership with Aardman to bring the quirky inventor and his long-suffering canine sidekick to a new series of episodic games, entitled Wallace & Gromit's Grand Adventures.
Just who are Wallace & Gromit?
Surely you're joking...? Okay, okay, if you really haven't heard of them, we'll help you out! (If you're one of the many who already know and love Wallace & Gromit, feel free to skip to the next question!)
Wallace & Gromit are the stars of several stop-motion animated films created by Nick Park and Aardman Animations in the UK. Wallace is a sometimes over-ambitious (yet always endearing) inventor with a penchant for cheese and crackers, not to mention fashionable knitwear. He's usually accompanied by his faithful companion, Gromit, a cultured, sensitive, and highly intelligent dog with a knack for bailing Wallace out of trouble. Gromit tends to prefer order and the quiet life over Wallace's hair-brained schemes, but he always comes to the rescue when his master's hair-brained plans go awry.
Over the past two decades, Wallace & Gromit have starred in three animated shorts that won a number of Academy awards and other honors. They're also the stars of an Oscar-winning feature film, The Curse of the Were-Rabbit. A fourth animated short, Wallace & Gromit in A Matter of Loaf and Death, is currently in production at Aardman.
What will Wallace & Gromit's Grand Adventures be like?
If you've played any of Telltale's other games, then you already know that we specialize in creating interactive entertainment experiences featuring strong characters, gameplay with a focus on storytelling, and an episodic release schedule. Wallace & Gromit's Grand Adventures will follow suit in all of these areas.
We strive to stay true to the source material, so you can expect Wallace & Gromit's Grand Adventures to feel uncannily similar to Aardman's animated films. Creative camerawork, intelligent humor, physical comedy, and a distinctive visual style will contribute to a cinematic experience that's true to the Wallace & Gromit animated stories Aardman has been producing for years. We're even building all sorts of new tech into our 3D engine, to make the characters and environments look as much like clay as possible. The best part is that in Telltale's games, you get to take an active role and drive the plot forward. So you won't just be an observer, but a participant in Wallace & Gromit's adventures!
Each game will have an original storyline developed by Telltale's writers in collaboration with Aardman, and as in the original animated films, much of the comedy will be physical and will evolve out of the strange scenarios the characters end up in. You'll get to play as both Wallace and Gromit in activities that include tinkering with crazy contraptions, embarking upon Wallace's wild entrepreneurial schemes, and finding your way out of the sticky situations that inevitably ensue.
Is this going to be a game for kids?
If you're a Wallace & Gromit fan, then you probably already know the answer to that! Wallace & Gromit has a wide appeal across all age groups, and our goal is to make a game that can be enjoyed by anyone who likes the humor and creativity of the Wallace & Gromit series. Adults and teens will enjoy the problem-solving scenarios and the high-brow humor. (Of course, the comedy is age appropriate for younger audiences, too, so the games will also be good for families to play together.)
If you're not already a Wallace & Gromit fan, think of Pixar's movies, which work for different audiences on different levels. If you're a fan of that kind of humor, you'll probably like these games!
Tell me more about this episodic release schedule.
Instead of just coming out with one game, at Telltale we release a series of games, one after the other, on a regular schedule. Each game is self-contained, and you can play them in any order you want, but following the series from the beginning to the end has its rewards, just like sticking with a favorite TV series throughout the season.
We'll get into more specifics about the episodic schedule, including how many episodes there will be and how often they'll come out, when Wallace & Gromit's Grand Adventures gets closer to release. (Until then, if you want to know more about episodic games, you should take a look at
Sam & Max and
Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People, both of which are episodic games.)
You guys are American, right? How can we be sure you won't mess this up?
Yes, we're American. But we love Wensleydale!
Will Wallace & Gromit games be available in stores?
Telltale's episodic games start out as digital downloads available through Telltale's website and select partners. After a series has been released episodically, we often expand to other distribution channels, including on discs sold from Telltale's website or in stores. We'll release more information about where to find Wallace & Gromit's Grand Adventures as it develops.
What more can you tell me?
In the near future, we'll be able to spill the beans on all sorts of good stuff, including release dates, platforms, and the storylines for the episodes. In the meantime, check out the teaser video, concept art, and images
