Hey Telltale, Whatcha Been Playing? - Jurassic Park Producer Chris Schroyer

It's time for another installment of our ongoing "Hey Telltale, Whatcha Been Playing?" series where we give you a look at which video games the team that makes some of your favorite games are playing themselves. This time we have a producer that's working on a game that happens to be releasing next week (Hint: it's Jurassic Park: The Game), Chris Shroyer!

Without further ado, here's what Chris has been playing:

"A few weeks ago I picked up a 3DS and while I’ve found a bunch of fun games on the platform, the one that has me hooked is actually DS game. Kirby Mass Attack looks like just another platformer on the surface, but the stylus-only controls and highly experimental level design makes it one of the freshest experiences I’ve played in a long time. Throughout the story mode you’ll guide an army of Kirbys to stomp on anything that crosses your path while solving some just-challenging-enough puzzles and discovering a bunch of secret passages/items/doohickeys along the way. While this is worth the price of admission by itself, the game really shines when it comes to its additive mini-games. These cleverly designed distractions vary in size and scope from a simple Simon Says button matching twitch-fest to a 5-level vertical scrolling shooter in the vein of the Star Soldier games.

When I’m playing on my PC I’m almost always found in front of Blocks That Matter, a platform-puzzler where players are cast in the role of a tiny, blocked-shaped robot that must save indie-game developers Alexey Pajitnov and Markus Persson. It’s the kind of game that would appeal to folks like me that dream of an update to strange puzzle games like Solomon’s Key or Adventures of Lolo. The puzzles are the good kind of challenging, the controls are just right, and fans of indie platformers will see a host of character cameos (in block form, of course).
Looking ahead, I can barely stand the wait for The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword and eagerly await release dates for The Last Guardian and Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2."

Explore Jurassic Park On the Official Site - Phase 2 Now Open

When we launched the newly revamped Jurassic Park: The Game official site we promised you'd be able to explore Isla Nublar soon enough and sure enough, today is the day - welcome to Jurassic Park! 

Much like John Hammond's original plans for his wildlife preserve, where only a portion of the attractions were to be accessible on opening day with a more robust lineup of rides and exhibits to follow, we've expanded the original site and opened the gates to Jurassic Park for all to get a look at the wildlife that calls Isla Nublar home!

We've also uncovered some files that Dennis Nedry had hidden away deep in the InGen databases but haven't been able to crack the password needed to access what's behind those firewalls. It keeps asking us for the magic word. Please do try your luck at getting past Nedry's pesky security as what's behind his password protection is likely valuable pieces of information about the park that was not meant to be seen by the Jurassic Park visitors.

Jurassic Park - First Viewing Memories From Around the Office

The Jurassic Park Ultimate Trilogy just released and it's once again brought to the forefront the incredible subject matter that fuels our upcoming release, Jurassic Park: The Game. Making a huge impression with the technological advances put forward in bringing realistic looking dinosaurs to the big screen for the first time, Jurassic Park is now a cinema classic. As our staff has always been packed to the brim with huge fans of the properties we work on, Jurassic Park, is no different, so I've taken this opportunity to gather some responses from some of the Telltale team on the feelings and experiences they had when seeing Jurassic Park for the first time.

Ryan Weller -

When Jurassic Park hit the movie theaters I was 12 years old and my sister was eight. At the time, my mom was, well, a little over-protective. She had expressed her misgivings about her 12 year old son seeing a movie about "dinosaurs eating people." However, knowing that I would eventually find a way to see the movie (seriously, what kid didn't want to see it?!?), she took my little sister and I to go see a showing.

After we sat down and the movie started playing, there was this almost hushed like wonder that was present throughout the room. You have to remember, this being 1993 no one had seen computer graphics to this level. So when the dinosaurs were on screen there wasn't a single person moving, eating, or drinking - just stillness. It was amazing how life-like they were, how the leather skin moved, bunched, and stretched as they darted across the screen. The only time I took my eyes off the screen was when my Mom freaking out. Somehow, my sister found herself sitting on my mom's lap. My mom had her hands around my sister's head, ready to cover her eyes at the first sign of anything "gross" or "scary." Remember near the end of the movie when the Velociraptors were chasing after everyone in the main compound and they were up in the vents? There was a moment when Lex (Hammond's granddaughter) almost got her leg bit by a Velociraptor and Dr. Alan Grant pulled her leg away at just the right time. At that moment I heard both my Mom and my sister scream. I looked to my left and my mom had her hands clamped around my sister's eyes/head and was whipping her around left to right. My Mom was screaming because she got scared from the movie, while my sister was screaming because she was getting thrown about like a rag doll. I couldn't help but laugh as these two made a scene.  And of course as a loving caring teenage brother who loves his sister very very much, I was just happy it wasn't me being thrown about!

It was an amazing movie with "one of those" family stories that gets passed around whenever I want to embarrass my mom.

J.D. Straw -

Going to the movies with my dad growing up was one of the few ways we could bond over things that interested me. I was just starting high school when Jurassic Park came to theaters. Fortunately, the theater we saw the film in had just prepared itself for DTS Digital Surround. I can honestly say, we'd never heard anything like it. Hearing T-Rex growl behind you, or raptors skitter about behind the camera - behind you - was something else. It's funny to think how we reacted in a way similar to film goers at the turn of the 20th century, fleeing from the oncoming train in The Great Train Robbery. I remember constantly fighting the urge to look behind me.

The film really impressed my father and I. At the time, I was too inarticulate to put it into words - probably a lot of "awesomes" and "mind blowings."

Jessica Lozano -

I was six years old when Jurassic Park came out. I remember my dad being super excited about the movie, so he took us all to go see it in theaters. The only thing I really remember is the part when everyone sees the brachiosaurus for the first time and being awestruck - like it was the coolest thing ever.

Nat Dart -

I was eight years old when I saw Jurassic Park in the movie theatre with my dad. The scene where the tyrannosaurus flips the tour vehicle stands out as being the most nerve racking moment in the movie for me at the time. My dad recalls that I pulled out half of the hairs on his arm because I was gripping it so tightly! 

Joe Pinney -

My jaw dropped just like Sam Neill and Laura Dern's. I still think of it as the first time I saw "real" dinosaurs. My animator friends try to point out glitches in the FX, but I can't figure out what the hell they're talking about.  Those are DINOSAURS!

Dave Bogan -

I remember that I was so excited by the shot of the T-Rex's foot stepping down into the mud just after Dr. Grant pulls Lex out of the overturned tour car - excited to not see the rubber bouncing toe syndrome that comes along with animatronics or costumed creatures. The attention to detail of the compressing flesh and seemingly correct physics of the feet and toes made this a believable moment for me that was far beyond anything I had seen in past films. You could fully believe these dinos were living and breathing.

Sean Vanaman -

I saw the original with my parents at a matinee the day after my dad had broken his wrist. My mom lost her silly mind during the velociraptor scenes and would grab my dad's arm - he'd shriek in pain as my mom clawed at his tender and swollen arm during the kitchen scene. It added a certain charm to a movie that was already blowing my tiny mind.

Richard Iggo -

Like many people, I grew up loving dinosaurs. I knew all the names, would correct my teachers on pronunciation and had a vast collection of models either bought from museum shops or made from kits with my dad's help. So, when Jurassic Park came out, even though I was now twenty years old, I was pretty excited. I remember seeing the brachiosaurus and I think that my reaction was just like Dr. Grant's on-screen response, except I didn't stand up in my theater chair and turn someone's head to look; that would have been weird. But still, I was sat grinning ear to ear because this was the first time that dinosaurs looked like I'd imagined them as a kid. They were no longer low-grade puppets or jerky stop-motion animation - they looked like they were alive. In the movie, John Hammond said "We've made biological attractions so astounding that they'll capture the imaginations of the entire planet!". Eighteen years after that line was uttered, they still do.

Dennis Lenart -

I saw Jurassic Park in the theater for my 13th birthday party with a big group of my closest friends. It was playing at the newly upgraded DTS surround sound system "dome" theater by my house. I remember vividly how when the DTS logo came up for the first time and the theater started to rumble, everyone went silent and a great deal of "this is going to be intense" looks were exchanged. A few people even covered their ears it was so loud. Then the film started and all of us sunk back in our seats a bit, bracing for the impact of what we were about to see.

The opening scene with the raptor in the cage had me so on edge that I thought I was going to have a heart attack. Jaws made me terrified of sharks and now Jurassic Park was making me scared of dinosaurs. But the moment that had the most impact on me was yet to come. There's a well-known scene where the group goes out into the field for the first time to experience the park. The music began relatively light hearted, but I was braced for impact, sure that going out into the wild under no more cover than the roll cage of an open-top jeep would definitely bring about another action scene. Then the jeep stopped and all of a sudden the music became low and uncertain, a bit of mystery, a bit of tension. I gripped the arms of my chair a little more tightly and started scanning the frame for any hints of oncoming predators. "Here we go," I thought. My heart rate started to rise again. The music began to build toward a crescendo, which I thought could only end one way. Then at the peak of the tension, it seamlessly transitioned into the now classic John Williams theme and I got a look at a hundred foot tall brachiosaurus for the first time. It was real in that moment and although I was obsessed with special effects and ILM at the time, I didn't even contemplate how they brought a 65 million year old dinosaur back to life because it didn't matter. The music, the cinematography, the special effects...everything was in perfect sync and I was forever changed.

I sat in that theater for the next hour and a half in complete awe and when I came out into the harsh mid-day summer sun of reality, I made the decision to go into storytelling. It was really that simple. I immediately begged my parents to buy a camera and started making short films. The first feature length film that I ever fantasized about making was a sequel to Jurassic Park, which was oddly enough followed by the first script I ever worked on...a sequel to Back to the Future. I had no idea that 15 years later I'd be working at a company that would bring back both licenses. The worst part was that they were both in production at the same time so I could only work on one.

Andrew Langley -

Just like every other 12 year old boy in the world, I saw Jurassic Park in the theater as soon as absolutely possible. Five years later while in high school, I was hired as an intern at the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History. They asked me to help put an exhibit together in their new technology showcase to demonstrate all the cool ways computers can be used. I immediately thought of Jurassic Park and created a kiosk that demonstrated how 3D art and animation was used to create realistic dinosaurs on film. This was still a completely new concept to most people at the time. I sat in that exhibit for an entire year while Jurassic Park played on and endless loop, and I still never got tired of watching it.

It's been surreal to be working 14 years later as a programmer and director on the Jurassic Park videogame. If I knew back then that I'd be working on this today, I would have totally flipped out.

Hey Telltale, Whatcha Been Playing? - Jurassic Park Designer Mark Darin

And we're back again with another installment in the ongoing "Hey Telltale, Whatcha Been Playing" series, a look at what games our team plays and what draws them to those particular titles! As Jurassic Park is just a few weeks away from launch, this episode (because Telltale is all about episodic content) delves into the recent gaming habits of Jurassic Park: The Game designer Mark Darin. 

Here's what Mark had to say:

"I’m a sucker for action-adventure games, especially ones that have a unique cinematic presentation to their storytelling. Strangely, the games I’m playing right at this moment are all HD re-mastered versions of older games. Last night I finished up the God of War: Origins collection; hi-res versions of the two God of War games that were originally released for the PSP. Those games are like candy for me - horrible, bloody, face pounding candy. The visuals are so slick and the gameplay is super smooth. I know there is a story being told as well but I just get sucked into the visceral experience.

On the other hand, I’m also re-playing through the amazing HD re-releases of Ico and Shadow of the Colossus. These games are fantastic examples of cinematic storytelling in games for me. Even with almost no dialog, these games immerse you into a fascinating world and really make one care about the characters in a truly emotional way. The gameplay can sometimes be frustrating to me, but the way it supports the narrative and creates a holistic experience is truly masterful!

We welcome our robot overlords. That's what we'll be saying if the advances in artificial intelligence that Telltale core engineer Bruce Wilcox and others like him keep up like they have been. Bruce, winner of last year's Loebner Prize for Artificial Intelligence with his chatbot Suzette, is back at it as he's just won this year's contest with his newest smartbot, Rosette!

Wondering what the Loebner Prize for Artificial Intelligence is? Well (and if you're reading this out loud you'll want to take a deep breath), it's an annual contest where four judges deem which of the competing chatbots is the most "human-like", with the determination being made by a judge posing questions simultaneously via computer entry to both an actual human and the chatbot (the Turing test). If the judge is unable to discern whether they're talking to the chatbot or a human, or is actually fooled, the chatbot passes the Turing test. The chatbot that convinces the most judges is declared the winner. You can learn more about the Loebner Prize on the official home page.

Welcome...To Our New Jurassic Park Website

In the words of Jurassic Park's indomitable chief engineer John Arnold, "hold on to your butts" as we introduce you to our brand new Jurassic Park: The Game site! This site, along with the Telltale Games blog, is your best resource for information about the upcoming return to Isla Nublar - launching on November 15.

What you see today is "stage one" of the site, much like John Hammond planned the development of Jurassic Park to be rolled out, first with the wildlife preserve followed by the amusement park. Whatcha been playing? That's a question that gets tossed around anywhere a group of folks known to play video games congregates. Knowing what shapes someone's opinions, creative instincts, and interests is a key piece of information in understanding why something is and that's no different in games. That's why I'm launching this ongoing featurette, delving into what forms of their craft our team is playing and enjoying. Not only will this give insight into what Telltale staff members are playing but perhaps inspire you to delve into a new type of game you've never considered before!

For the first installment of "Hey Telltale, Whatcha Been Playing?" I've cajoled Jurassic Park designer Joe Pinney into spilling the beans on what he's been digging into video game wise and he obliged. Here's what he had to say. 

"I’ve been binging like an idiot on Battle for Wesnoth. It’s an indie (free on PC & Mac) fantasy-themed turn-based strategy game built by David White and many others. If you like that kind of thing... if you long for the days of Warlords will love it. Super simple, low-tech, core fun. It has a terrific random map generator (like Warlords 3) so you can skirmish into infinity. If it only had mysterious obelisks to explore, well, I wouldn’t be showing up at the office. What does it have to do with Jurassic Park (my last project) or The Walking Dead (my current one)? Absolutely nothing!"

Jurassic Park: The Game Xbox Achievements Unlocked

Hold on to your butts, possible spoilers ahead. You'll be hearing the now famous Achievement Unlocked notification blip as you unlock the slew of Achivements in Jurassic Park: The Game, coming to the Xbox 360 on Novemeber 15! Fans will be able to start exploring Isla Nublar on the PlayStation 3, PC, and Mac on the same day, with an iPad 2 version of the game in the works!

Some folks can't wait to find out what they're going to have to do to rack up points to their Gamerscore in their Xbox 360 games (I know I'm one of them) and Jurassic Park: The Game has fifty ways to do just that. If you are one of those people too well, this is the blog post for you.

Telltale CEO and Co-Founder Dan Connors Speaks Out on Our Mobile Plans

The folks at Gamasutra got a chance to chat with one of our fair leaders, CEO and co-founder Dan Connors, about our successes on the iPad and what we have on the horizon across mobile platforms in general. 

Due to the iPad being such an effective platform for us (it's been our fastest-growing revenue driver), we're going to continue to focus efforts on developing versions of our games for Apple's ubiquitous tablet. That's right, if you hadn't already heard, we're working on an iPad 2 version of Jurassic Park: The Game as well as iPad versions of Sam & Max: Beyond Time and Space and our Law & Order based episodic title (the first episodes of which are targeted for a Fall 2011 release)! 

We do have our collective eye on the wide variety of mobile devices launching and continue to look at every platform as a possible place for our games to live.

Have no fear ye Telltale faithful, we continue to be commited to delivering our games on as many platforms as possible. As Dan Connors states in the interview, "Telltale has always been a platform agnostic company and has no plans to change that philosophy".

A Taste of Telltale: What Foods Keep Our QA Team Testing

Getting a game prepped and ready for release to the public is a lot of hard work, and few know that more than the Telltale QA crew. When one of our titles is nearing go-time, the fine folks in our QA department put in long days (and nights and weekends) to make sure everything is ready to rock on time. Since most of QA are not robots, they sometimes need to take a break in their poring over builds of our games and well…eat. I took a few minutes to chat with our QA team to find out what keeps them ticking and testing, so here's a little bit of insight into what their preferred sources of sustenance are!

It's worth noting that most of these establishments are local to San Rafael, California so playing the Telltale QA Team home game may not be 100% possible for all.

Sol Food - The establishment that was immediately brought up was a local Puerto Rican cuisine spot called Sol Food. This place is a staple for many at the Telltale Games office, though the fact that Sol Food delivers their delicious Latin dishes keeps them at the front of QA's speed dial.

Pizza - Pretty self-explanatory here. Pizza is often the go-to grub as it easily feeds a group, both in terms of placing an order and in sheer quantity. Though the basic premise of a pizza pie is simple, the QA team usually chooses one of the nearby pizza joints, Extreme Pizza or Brooklyn Pizza Company, to cull their hunger.

Donuts - A tasty tradition has begun in the QA department. Wednesday mornings, one of the generous members of the QA team brings a batch of donuts to satiate the sweet teeth of our test team, and luckily, the rest of the downstairs Telltale office (where I am fortunate enough to sit). On the most special of Wednesdays he makes a stop at local shop Donut Alley, the home of The Baconator. What is The Baconator you ask? It's a maple donut sprinkled with the most unhealthy, yet delectable, bits of bacon.

Honorable Mentions - While Puerto Rican food, pizza, and donuts round out the heavy hitters of QA's aliments, there are a couple of spots that they mentioned help keep their taste buds guessing. Quiznos is a new addition to the lineup that may soon be among the pantheon of greats. Starbucks runs are essential for that late afternoon kick after a day of testing. Regional favorite In-N-Out is also a frequent choice for lunch on days where there's a bit of extra time as the nearest location is a few freeway exits away.

Cool Stuff: IGN Unboxes the Jurassic Park Ultimate Trilogy Limited Edition

As Jurassic Park fans already know, the classic Jurassic Park Ultimate Trilogy DVD and Blu-Ray set launches on October 25 (hey, that's when Back to the Future: The Game hits the Nintendo Wii and Sony PlayStation 3 at retail too) and, along with the standard release, a sweet Limited Edition unleashes that same day. Jurassic Park: The Game comes out just a few weeks later, on November 15! The Ultimate Trilogy Limited Edition comes packed with a statue depicting a Tyrannosaurus Rex crashing through the famous Jurassic Park gates and is packed in a nice, crate-style box. 

But don't let me spoil the fun. IGN put together a little video showcasing the unboxing of the awesome box set featuring the actress that played Lex Murphy, Ariana Richards. Watch and enjoy!

We also documented the unboxing of the mysterious delivery on video for all the world to see! Here it is!

The Back to the Future 2015 Nikes Are Real

For the Back to the Future fans out there, Nike has recently announced that they're launching the almost real deal pair of Nikes that Marty McFly wears in Back to the Future: Part 2 in the form of the Nike MAG shoe!

These shoes look just like the self-lacing shoes that Marty wore to fit into Hill Valley of 2015 with the light-up feature but don't actually lace themselves up - yet. Nike has filed a patent for the self-lacing technology so it's very possible we'll be seeing another iteration on the MAGs in the future!

Getting your hands (or feet) on a pair of these hot sneakers may not be as easy as Marty had it as there are only 1,500 pairs being manufactured and they're all being auctioned off, but the proceeds from the purchase of these shoes goes directly to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research so it's for a great cause!
