WalkingDead 1 - Black Screen on all episodes

posted by Giblin91 on - Viewed by 1K users

Hi! I have a problem with my walking dead game. It is the third time I play it and never had such problems. Reading on your forum I prepared the zip file you need. I also noticed some issue with the cloud game saves: I used to play on my tower pc, but I wanted to go on on my laptop. Syncronisation faild and broke may saved files. I had to play everything again. Then, on laptop I switched to Italian Language and the saves were lost. going back to english and they are there... why? Now, wanted to play on my tower pc again I playd first episode and then black screen problem on episode launch happened (I used to play in italian). tried to switch to english anche the saves are there, but still not working. At a certain point appeared the saves from the laptop (which I thought I deleted) and now again I see may current game (at episode one). I don't understand...

Please rename the prefs.prop file in

    C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\The Walking Dead\Pack\default

to prefs.prop.bak to disable it, then restart the game, and your saves should be restored.

    • I did as you told me. Now I see my old saves from the laptop. Too bad, they are seves from a finished game. I tried to rewind a chapter to see and still doesen't go on. remains balck screen with music and nothing. I had a save from end chapter 2 separeted from the others and tried that too. chapter three starts normally, but here too If I want to rewind ch 2 I get a black screen

If you have extra prefs.prop files, you will have to rename them to prefs.prop.bak to disable them. If you are still experiencing issues with them being disabled, the next step would be to back them up to an external storage device, and they should not interfere with the game anymore.

        • Still not working: I copied as a back up that file and deleted from the WD folder, but still I'm unable to rewind episode 2. If I create a new game and play directly episode 2 there is no problem, but choices are generated randomly. If I take a previous completed game and rewind episode 1 lasts moment, just to finish the episode quickly and see how it work with episode two again, the game rewinds me in the middle of ep. 1 and not where I selected... wtf?

My apologies. If you have moved save files, or renamed them as I specified and the game is still not working for you, could you please upload a new support tool so that I can check your save file directory again?

Please rename the prefs.prop file in

                C:\Users\user\Desktop\Da sistemare\Nuova cartella\the walking dead

to prefs.prop.bak to disable it, then start the game, and your save files should be restored.
                • That one is a folder for backup. It should not interfere... Still I did as you said but file are corrupted. If I want to replay chapter one only the end, the last minutes, it goes in the middle of the chapter...

Any prefs.prop files on your computer that are not renamed prefs.prop.bak will cause your save games to not work, regardless of what folder they are in. I recommend you do a search on your computer for prefs.prop. You should only have one copy of this file in your save game directory. If you find another copy elsewhere, this needs to be removed.

Usually this duplicate file can be found in either a Gamedata folder adjacent to your save directory, or in your installation folder. If you are playing on Steam, you will need to find the Walking Dead game data within your Steam installation folder. If you remove this prefs file, but still experience the issue, then it's possible the duplicate file is being recognized instead of the prefs in your save directory. Please take the duplicate file and move it into your save folder (which will overwrite the existing file). You may want to back-up both of these files before attempting this process, just in case.

Unfortunately, if this does not resolve your issue, then your prefs file has most likely been corrupted. This is rare, but can happen if the save is compromised (for example, if the game crashes during an autosave, or if the game is closed using Task Manager). If this is the case, then the corrupted prefs can no longer be used and should be removed from your computer to prevent any further complications.
