About the Game

Based on HBO’s award-winning television drama, Game of Thrones – A Telltale Games Series tells the story of House Forrester, a noble house from the north of Westeros. Caught up in the events of The War of the Five Kings, they are placed in a precarious position where members of the household must do everything they can to prevent the house from meeting its doom.

Ironrath

Built over fifteen hundred years ago by Cedric Forrester and his triplet sons, Ironrath is a testament to the strength and endurance of Ironwood itself.   Ironrath sits on the edge of the largest Ironwood forest in Westeros, which has proven to be a strategic advantage for the House.

House Forrester

House Forrester is a noble house from the Wolfswood in the north of Westeros. Bannermen to House Glover, they have always offered unswerving loyalty to the ruling great house of the North – the Starks. The Forresters are seated at Ironrath, an imposing stronghold surrounded by towering Ironwood trees. The Forrester house words are ‘Iron from Ice’, which echoes their belief that – like the Ironwood itself – the adverse conditions and unforgiving landscape of the North only makes them stronger.

episode two

The Lost Lords

House Forrester is in disarray. Their liege lord and his heir are dead, Ironrath is occupied by Whitehill soldiers, and the youngest member of the family has been taken from them. The survival of the family now depends on a handmaiden, a squire forced to take the black, and an exiled son.

At King’s Landing, Mira Forrester must weigh her loyalty to Margaery Tyrell against the needs of her family, all the while choosing how to play the political games of Tyrion Lannister. To the far north, Gared Tuttle finds that the wall and its crows hold little love for a squire from the Wolfswood, but finds kinship in the bastard son of Ned Stark. To the east, in far-away Yunkai, Asher Forrester, the exiled son, is called back to Westeros to aid his family, but how can one man help when the Boltons rule the north with an iron fist?

A misstep by any one of them could spell doom for the entire family.

Meanwhile, an unexpected source of hope returns to the Forresters, but Ironrath is no place for the weak.

episode three

The Sword in the Darkness

The fate of House Forrester lies on a knife edge. Asher, the exile, heads to Mereen in search of an army to take on the Whitehills. Pursued across an unforgiving land, the Lost Legion becomes the least of his worries in an encounter he will not soon forget: forcing him to choose between family and friendship. Meanwhile, far across land and sea in Westeros, Mira must deal with the lethal politics of King's Landing. Her family's safety is paramount and she will do anything to protect them, but nothing is given freely, and her choice of allies may soon come to haunt her. To the north, in Ironrath, the Whitehill occupation continues. Gryff Whitehill, fourth-born son, is out to prove himself, and brutality and violence grows daily, pushing the Forresters to make far-reaching decisions. Finally, at the Wall, Gared learns that he must head north if he is to help his house survive. But fate is cruel, forcing choices that will change his path forever.

episode four

Sons of Winter

In Episode 4, the fate of the scattered Forresters hangs in the balance, and no one allied with the family is safe. An unexpected meeting offers Rodrik a new opportunity to free Ironrath from its Whitehill stranglehold, but with young Ryon Forrester still held prisoner, his next moves are critical. Gared must abandon Castle Black and venture beyond the Wall in search of the mysterious North Grove, risking encounters with Wildlings and worse. In King's Landing, the population is reeling from a recent royal death, and Mira must step carefully in an increasingly complex game of politics where secrets are traded as currency. Far away in Essos, Asher infiltrates the slave city of Meereen at the behest of Daenerys Targaryen, but will the friendship he holds dear break under the strain of a mission that raises memories best forgotten?

episode five

A Nest of Vipers

In this penultimate episode, the actions of every Forrester are vital to the survival of the house.

Rodrik’s alliance with House Glenmore, and his defiance of the Whitehills, has drawn the ire of an even greater threat: Ramsay Snow.

Far across the Narrow Sea in Essos, with Meereen now a free city, Asher is close to securing the army he desperately needs to return home, and save his family.

In King’s Landing, Mira’s activities at Tommen’s coronation have not escaped the attention of Margaery Tyrell, and Cersei has realized that the handmaiden may prove useful in her political games.

Finally, beyond the Wall, Gared’s unlikely allies are reluctant to help in the search for the North Grove… but this far into the frozen wilds, Crows and Free Folk have a common enemy; and winter is coming.

FAQ

Is the game based on George R.R. Martin’s original books, or HBO’s TV show?
Our game series is based on the world, characters and events seen in HBO’s TV show, which in turn is based on George R. R. Martin’s books (A Song of Ice and Fire).
When and where does the game take place?
The events in our game series begin towards the end of Season Three of the TV show, and end right before the beginning of Season Five. You will visit familiar locations such as King’s Landing and The Wall, as well as unfamiliar locations such as Ironrath, the home of House Forrester.
Do I play a character I’m familiar with from the TV show?
No. Although you will meet and interact with familiar characters, you play the game from five different viewpoints; all members of House Forrester. This allows us to tell a brand new story within the world of Westeros that isn’t pre-determined by the events seen in the show. It’s important to note though, that the events and characters of the show are intertwined with the game, and do have a very powerful impact on House Forrester.
Who are the Forresters?
House Forrester is a noble house from the Wolfswood in the north of Westeros. Bannermen to House Glover, they have always offered unswerving loyalty to the ruling great house of the North – the Starks. The Forresters are seated at Ironrath, an imposing stronghold surrounded by towering Ironwood trees. The Forrester house words are ‘Iron from Ice’, which echoes their belief that – like the Ironwood itself – the adverse conditions and unforgiving landscape of the North only makes them stronger. Although the Forresters have not appeared in HBO’s TV show, they are canon to the world created by George R. R. Martin, having appeared in the book ‘A Dance with Dragons’.
Why is Ironwood so important?
Ironwood trees are a valuable commodity in Westeros, valued for their incredibly strong and long-lasting wood. Many of the best weapons, ships, and defensive structures include the use of ironwood. Those that control the Ironwood therefore gain importance and power among their peers. House Forrester controls the majority of the Ironwood forests in the Wolfswood, much to the chagrin of their bitter rivals, House Whitehill.
Who will I play as?
You will play the game from five different points of view. Each character you play as is a member of House Forrester; either a direct family member, or a person in service to House Forrester. Scattered across Westeros and Essos, the characters play their part in seeking to save House Forrester from destruction.
Do Telltale’s games usually feature this many playable characters?
No. The increased number of playable characters not only reflects the epic scope of Game of Thrones, but is also something that the player needs to be mindful of, because the actions of one character that you are in control of can ripple out to affect the rest of House Forrester. Multiply the actions of one character by five, and you’re truly playing the Game of Thrones…where you win, or you die.
What kind of game is this?
Games of Thrones is an adventure game similar to Telltale’s other award-winning series’ The Walking Dead – A Telltale Games Series, and The Wolf Among Us. Telltale’s games offer a ‘tailored story’ meaning that the story you experience could be very different to someone else playing the game. This is because the story changes around you based on the choices that you make. The reverberations from each choice may be felt immediately, later in an episode, or something may sneak up and surprise you much later in the series.
Why is this game episodic? What does that mean?
Telltale has a history of releasing episodic games – our development philosophy is built around it and it’s something that makes us different from most other developers. Like many story-based TV shows, the game will tell a complete story arc over the course of a season. We will release one episode at a time until all episodes are available and the season is complete.
How many episodes are there in the season, and when are they made available?
There are six episodes in this first season of Game of Thrones. Episodes are usually available to download between 4 and 6 weeks apart.
Is George R. R. Martin involved in the production of this game?
Although Mr. Martin is not directly involved in the day to day creation of the game, he has oversight of the story and other content via his former assistant and collaborator on numerous projects, Ty Franck. Mr. Franck - consultant to Telltale, and author in his own right – ensures that the game is in-keeping and canonically correct with the world that George R. R. Martin and HBO have created.
How is HBO involved?
HBO is the license-holder for Game of Thrones, providing support, guidance, and approval of the game and its contents.
Do I need to have watched the Game of Thrones TV show in order to enjoy this game series?
You can play and enjoy Telltale’s Game of Thrones series without having watched the TV show. However, you will get the maximum amount of enjoyment if you have watched the show to at least the end of season three, and preferably beyond.
Will any characters from the TV show appear in the game?
Yes, you will meet with and interact with major characters from the TV show. We’ll let you find out who!
Do the actors from the TV show featured in the game reprise their roles?
Yes.
Why does the game look the way it does?
Since the first season of The Walking Dead, Telltale has employed a visual direction of ‘pictures brought to life’. In The Walking Dead and The Wolf Among Us, we looked to the original comic book source material as inspiration. For Game of Thrones, we chose a ‘painterly’ look, that is, something that looks like a living oil painting. We feel that this is in-keeping with the epic and fantastical nature of George R. R. Martin’s and HBO’s world.
Is this game difficult to play? What are the controls like?
Our games are designed to allow anyone to play (rating allowing), regardless of their experience as a ‘gamer’. The difficulty comes not in mastering controls, but in being forced to make tough decisions with far-reaching consequences.
Is this game series available to buy on disc?
No. We may release the full season on disc, or other retail format, sometime after the final episode is made available to download; check back for more information. Telltale is a ‘digital-first’ company.
How long is each episode?
It varies by player, but most people finish an episode in around 2 hours.
Is there multiplayer?
No. However, we’ve found that many people like to play ‘together’ and enjoy the episode as a group, much like watching a TV show, except here, you can determine what happens through the choices you make.
Which games systems is this game series available for?
Game of Thrones will initially be available to download on Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PC, Mac, and compatible iOS devices. Other platforms are to be announced.
